The closed Bealls store on Southside Commons is currently used as an indoor shooting range.
A year after RM Bealls posted a “Closing Sale” sign on the door of Southside Commons in the Regency area, the landlord is looking for a zone exemption to see if they can open an indoor shooting range in the standalone building .
However, there is no lease agreement or plan to open one.
“This is just an exploratory concept. We are investigating the concept of a use there, ”said Michael McNaughton, Chief Operating Officer of the rental company Sleiman Enterprises, on March 1st.
He said Sleiman Enterprises wanted to understand, “what if there are problems that might preclude this type of use.”
McNaughton said the use was “an idea we had for this facility.”
“There is no deal or anything to announce there in any way. We check the limits of use and admissibility. “
Southside Retail LLC, part of Jacksonville-based Sleiman Enterprises LLC, is filing the exemption for the former Bealls at 651 Commerce Center Drive.
Southside Commons covers 26 acres east of the Southside Connector, north of Regency Square Mall.
Bealls transformed the store from its traditional concept to RM Bealls, a brand of the chain that focused on “consistently lower prices” but closed less than six months later.
Bradenton-based Bealls sells casual wear and housewares.
Bealls said on his website in October 2019 that two stores became RM Bealls – the Jacksonville store in Southside Commons and one store in Deerfield Beach.
A map from Southside Commons shows that Bealls rented 80,000 square feet of space in the free-standing building, which is located within the center at 860 Commerce Center Drive.
Southside Commons anchor tenants include The Church of Eleven22, Planet Fitness, Ross, and Michaels.
