JACKSONVILLE, Florida – A group of churchgoers stop a man from stealing a car with three children in it.
It happened in a church parking lot in Arlington.
According to a police report, 19-year-old Rigoberto Soto Junior tried to steal a car with three children in it at Destination Church.
A Witness who wishes to remain anonymous for security reasons tells Action News Jax that a Bible study was just graduating when it happened.
He says he noticed a car in the parking lot that was reversing extremely quickly.
“My first thought was ‘Oh no, he’s going to run over a lot of people’.”
One of the kids in the car recounts what happened in the police report and partially says, “[SotoJopenedthedriver’sdoorandsatinthedriver’sseatThesuspectthensaidwerolleddownthenjumpedoutofthevehiclescreamingforhelp”[SotoJropenedthedriver’sdoorandgotoftethetthedriverseatdown[SotoJröffnetedieFahrertürundsetztesichaufdenFahrersitzDerVerdächtigesagteunsdannwirsollenrunterrunterdannsprangsieausdemFahrzeugundschrieumHilfe“[SotoJropenedthedriver’sdoorandgotintothedriverseatThesuspectthentoldustogetdowngetdown…shethenjumpedoutofthevehicleandscreamedforhelp”
The witness says his adrenaline kicked in at that moment.
“I ran to the door, opened the door while driving, and managed to park the car and turn off the ignition.”
He and others were able to pin Soto Jr. to the ground until the police arrived.
“While he was on the ground, he just cursed and cursed the whole time and I said I think you need Jesus.”
He says he’s not sure what his intentions were – the car or the kids.
Fortunately, no one was hurt.
“It could have been a lot worse. God had his protection over us because I was in the right place at the right time. “
Soto Jr. faces three charges of kidnapping, vehicle theft and resisting arrest.
