Two have been charged with tried theft of the Jacksonville Meals Lion

JACKSONVILLE, NC (WITN) – A man and woman are indicted following an attempted robbery of a grocery store in Jacksonville.

According to the Jacksonville Police Department, officers responded to the Food Lion at 861 Piney Green Road Monday for a robbery report.

Investigators say Benjamin Freer, 41, of Wilmington, handed a clerk a note asking him to put $ 2,000 in a bag he handed her.

Officials say Freer left in a vehicle that was driven in front of the store.

A description resulted in the vehicle being stopped by an officer.

Freer faces charges of attempted common law robbery, possession of methamphetamine, possession of paraphernalia, and driving while driving license revocation.

Gillian Cunningham, 45, of Wilmington, was also arrested and charged by police with obtaining property through false deception, conspiracy of crimes and possession of stolen property. She was also served with an arrest warrant from Wake County.

Freer is held on a $ 23,000 bond while Cunningham received a $ 20,000 bond.
